IMSKA-USA (International Mabuni-ha Shitoryu Karate Association) represents a system of modern Japanese karate founded on the principles of the traditional Shitoryu style, one of the major styles of karate in Japan and worldwide. We blend the traditional and the new in karate techniques to serve two principal purposes that includes practical self-defense as well as exercise for physical and mental health. There is also a younger group that wants to partake in athletic competition. Through our unique blend of techniques and special equipment-training, we are able to provide an excellence in karate to meet both needs. Our overriding philosophy is that techniques must be effective in the streets and in the ring. Therefore our curriculum incorporates karate strikes and kicks with take downs and throws. In short, use whatever works and discard the rest. Do not be bound by tradition. A unique aspect of this organization is that all the instructors are highly experienced and certified, each having decades of teaching and competition experience at the national and international levels. One of the instructors Alexander Bruno - 5th Dan, was a former junior and senior national and international kata and kumite champion. Alumni of IMSKA include 6 past members of the official US national team, including ex-captain Glen West, Larry Scott, Leon Pate and Frank Bouchonville. The team of instructors is presided over by Dr. Ravee Raghavan - Japan and World Karate Federation certified 8th Dan. Dr. Raghavan has over 50 years of experience in traditional Shito-ryu karate. He is a former coach of 3 national teams in WKF and Shitokai world competitions (Malaysia-USA-Puerto Rico), and has produced many world caliber fighters, including medalists at the famous Dutch Open. He is also an author of many academic/karate publications, and is a recognized authority on Shitoryu and WKF competition. At IMSKA we believe in the fraternity of karatekas, irrespective of the style they belong to. As such, even though we are Shitoryu “thoroughbreds”, we welcome students from all styles and organizations. We encourage our members to have an open mind and be willing to explore modern techniques and training methods. Our goal is to build a “family” of organizations and clubs which are progressive and future oriented rather than being stuck in the past. IMSKA has an extensive network of international links with dojos, friends and colleagues in the US, Latin America, Europe & Asia. IMSKA’s recently completed world headquarters in Cidra/Puerto Rico at 2000 feet above sea level is a mere 25 minutes from the capital San Juan and year-round great tropical beaches. The facility comes with accommodation and kitchen facilities. Our main dojo in the U.S. Japan Karate Center II, is in Hillsborough, New Jersey under the direction of Mr. Alexander Bruno
